Credit Card Debt Elimination Programs
When it comes to credit card debt, there are a lot of different ways to get rid of it. If you want to enroll in some type of credit card debt elimination program, you'll probably need to go through a debt elimination company. They'll sit down and go over your financial situation with you before recommending a specific credit card debt elimination program for you. Here are some of the basic legal debt elimination programs you can expect to hear about:
- A debt consolidation loan is a loan given to you to pay off your credit cards all at once. Then, instead of making monthly payments to all those credit card companies, you make one monthly payment to the debt consolidation company. The benefit is that your interest rate is so much lower than what you were paying on your credit cards that you can have the loan paid off in five years.
- Debt settlement allows you to pay off your debt at 30-50 cents on the dollar, but you have to have that new, lower amount right away unless you can find a debt settlement company that's willing to give you more time.
- A debt consolidation mortgage allows you to borrow from the equity in your house to pay off your credit cards. Your payment is rolled into your mortgage payment, so you end up paying the same interest rate as your mortgage. This is probably the best form of credit card debt elimination there is--if you're a homeowner.
- If you have a lot of student loan debt, you might find that student loan debt consolidation is more to your liking. Most student loans have variable interest rates. But student loan debt consolidation can lock in a low FIXED rate for you. In some cases, your rate could be as low as 1.625% and your monthly student loan payments could be reduced by as much as 54%.
- Finally, the most popular form of credit card debt elimination--debt consolidation. Debt consolidation works by using negotiation to get your credit card balances and interest rates reduced, then those new, reduced amounts are all combined, and you make one monthly payment to a debt consolidation company instead of several monthly payments to your creditors. Because of all the reductions in balance and interest rates, you can be debt-free in about five years.
